At Papanui High School we offer a wide range of sports throughout both Summer and Winter. With over 25 sports to choose from, we accommodate around 600 students every year as they participate at both a social and competitive level. We want to encourage the students to value the enjoyment and teamwork of being part of a sport over prioritising the win.
Sport is broken up into Summer Sports, Term 1 and Term 4, and Winter sport, Term 2 and 3. Most sports are played on a Wednesday afternoon from 3 pm till 4.30 pm, with the exception of a few.
Where possible we offer all our Senior A teams/individuals along with our Junior teams/individuals the opportunity to compete in various Canterbury Secondary School and South Island Tournaments. These tournaments can take place here in Christchurch and throughout the South Island.

Papanui High School offers a busy extra-curricular calendar. The Arts are no exception, with active engagement across a broad range of events encouraged and supported by a skilled team of staff.
The Arts also offer school wide opportunities for involvement, with a major school production taking place each year. Either as a Musical or Play, these events occur in concurrent years and each involve students working across all aspects of the shows - performing, stage management, costume, make-up, sound & lighting and production.
The school employs a dedicated Arts Coordinator to support teaching staff in enabling a full co-curricular calendar. The Co-ordinator works alongside the school’s highly skilled Arts Teaching Team to deliver a programme of competitions, tours, shows, concerts and activities. Please view the list below for a snapshot of the range in a typical year at PHS.
